What did Jesus write in the sand.
By | July 19, 2010
What did Jesus write in the sand.
While Jesus was residing at the foot of the mount of olives, He appeared again in the temple courts at down. A large crowd of people had already gathered around Him, waiting expectantly for Him to speak. Jesus sat down to teach them about the Kingdom of heaven and His Father.
Suddenly there was an uproar right in front of Jesus. The teachers of the law and the pharisees, who knew the law intimately and upheld it to the letter, and carried it out without an ounce of love, brought in a woman caught in adultry. They made her stand in the centre of the square, before the group, and said to Jesus , “ Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery . In the law Moses commanded us to stone such woman. Now what do you say ? “
They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing Him, but without them losing face to the crowds.
However, Jesus stooped down and began writing on the ground with His finger.
When it seemed that Jesus was ignoring them, the scribes kept on questioning Him. He appeared to pay no attention at all to their question. What was Jesus writing in the sand?
They wondered. They wanted an answer to their question, and became more curious . What He was doing? They moved a litle closer to Jesus .
They asked Jesus again what He had to say about the adulterous woman.
But Jesus continued writing in the sand with His finger, without looking up.
When they kept on questioning Him he eventually straightened up and said to them.
“ if any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Again He bent down and wrote on the ground.
While Jesus continued scribing with His finger, They were suddenly filled with fear to discover that He was writing their names and their sins on the ground.
All at once they realized that Jesus knew everything about their sick and deceitful hearts, that He was able to discern their minds and emotions, that their inner thoughts were no secret to Him.
In that moment they knew that He was the Son of God, who searches the hearts and examines the mind, and rewards man according to his conduct, to what his deeds deserve.
They were like a partridge that hatches eggs it did not lay; not the way the Lord had ordained.
He wrote their names in the dust because they had forsaken the Lord, the spring of Living Water.
Ashamed, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until Jesus had written the last name in the sand. Only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.
Jesus straightened up and ask her, “ Woman, where are they ? Has no one condemned you ? “
“No one sir,” she said . “ Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin,”
Then Jesus said to the multitude again, “ learn this lesson: ‘ You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the father, who sent Me. ‘
‘ I am the light of the world . Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
